Top 7 Supplements to Curb Sugar Cravings & Manage Weight

Sugar cravings are a huge culprit in derailing even the healthiest of diets. You may be doing all the right things to avoid sugar, yet still find it calling your name. 

The chocolate screams your name after dinner, the donuts try to lure you into the break room at work, and that cake at your sister’s birthday the other day would not stop staring at you. It seems as though sugar has all the control, and it’s everywhere!

As a dietitian, I’ve seen the challenges people face trying to manage sugar cravings and the impact these sweets have on overall health. 

While a balanced diet is crucial, certain supplements can complement your efforts in curbing sugar cravings and promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Supplements to Curb Sugar Cravings

Myo-inositol 

Myo-inositol is my absolute favorite and, hence, top of the list! Many people taking this supplement say that it reduces their cravings for sweets generally within the first week. 

Plus, it offers many benefits related to weight loss, blood sugar control, PCOS, and fertility. 

Studies suggest that Myo-inositol supplementation in overweight women with PCOS (along with dietary changes) can improve insulin resistance and result in accelerated weight loss compared to diet alone. 

Theralobix Ovasitol is a favorite brand; it’s super easy to use (powder form, sweet flavor, easily mixed in water). It provides an effective dosage of Myo-inositol combined with d-chiro inositol in the same ratio found naturally in our bodies. 

Berberine

Berberine offers various health benefits, including aiding in weight loss by targeting metabolic processes. It helps regulate blood sugar levels, reducing cravings and improving insulin sensitivity, contributing to weight management. 

Additionally, berberine has anti-inflammatory properties, positively modulates the diversity of gut microbes, and may improve fatty liver. 

Allergy Research Group Berberine 500 is my top recommendation in large part because it’s highly concentrated, so you only need 1 pill twice daily versus other brands that require 2-3 pills twice daily to get the same dose.

Adrenal cortex

Adrenal cortex supplements can help support healthy adrenals, which function to improve energy and combat symptoms of chronic stress. What does this have to do with sugar cravings?

Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can increase appetite and cravings for high-calorie sugary foods as a way to manage or cope with that stress. 

Stress also impacts regions of the brain that are responsible for pleasure and reward. High stress can lead to an increased desire for foods high in sugar to temporarily relieve stress. 

Thorne’s Adrenal Cortex is my favorite option for improving adrenal functioning in those trying to mitigate chronic stress’s impact. 

Magnesium

Magnesium also plays a role in regulating glucose and insulin levels in the body, which helps to stabilize blood sugar so you don’t get the highs and lows that can cause sugar cravings. 

Additionally, magnesium has been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety, factors that can also contribute to sugar cravings.

Probiotics

Probiotics support digestive function, healthy immune response, and a beneficial balance of bacteria. Did you know that an imbalance in bacteria can increase sugar cravings?

Thorne’s FloraMend Prime Probiotic is a great one to start with if you’re also trying to lose weight. It includes a specific strain recognized for its ability to reduce fat. 

According to Thorne, “a study on the ingredients in FloraMend showed a nearly 5-percent average reduction in visceral and subcutaneous body fat with correlating positive effects on body weight, waist circumference, and BMI.”

Fiber
